The Honolulu Museum of Art is the state's leading arts institution and Honolulu's center for visual and performing arts. The museum, founded in 1927 and housing more than 50,000 works spanning 5,000 years, has had a film program since the 1930s. In 1977, screenings moved to what is now the Doris Duke Theatre. The 280-seat theatre screens independent, documentary, and international films and hosts a popular series of lectures, performances, and concerts by visiting artists and local performers. Throughout the year, the theatre showcases twelve film festivals to champion the multi-ethnic cultures that exist in Hawai'i.
